The History and Current Status of the Club

One of, if not the most important characteristics of Liverpool F.C. would be their history and the status that surrounds the club. The club was founded in 1892 in Liverpool, England, located in the northwest of England. Once one of the most important cities in England as it served as port city connecting trade from the coast to the central and northern parts of England.

If you were to ask a random person on the street what comes to mind when they think of the city, their answers would most likely be “The Beatles” or “Liverpool F.C.” or even both, but certainly, one or the other. To say that the club is on the same level of popularity as The Beatles would not be too big of an exaggeration. The Beatles and the club definitely have a history together as well. The Kop, the famous section at Anfield, have sung songs about the club since they formed and when The Beatles took the world by storm in the 60s the fans would recite their top hits during the games. In the following decades, the club would follow in The Beatles footsteps and also take the (sporting) world by storm.

Now, if one were to ask someone what comes to mind when they think of Liverpool F.C. one would probably say “success.” Besides racking up nearly 50 domestic trophies, what separates Liverpool from the rest of the teams in England would be the fact that they hold six European trophies (Champions League) which is a record amongst all English teams. The most recent European title was earned by the club only a mere week ago on June, 1, 2019.

Due to their continental success, they have been dubbed by fans as “European Royalty”, which no fan, rival or not, can argue. The club’s great achievements started under a manager named Bill Shankly and continued under his successor, Bob Paisley. As the managers of the club from the 60s – 80s, Liverpool saw nothing but unrivaled glory. For decade’s they were feared throughout England and Europe. Some would even say they “conquered” Europe. The fans do in fact say this and they even have a line about it in one of the songs they sing during the games.

But, after those managers and players retired the club began to struggle. Many new managers with new tactics and styles were hired and they brought in players whom they felt could fit their systems but virtually all of those experiments failed. Millions upon millions of pounds were spent but Liverpool still saw none of the glory that they once had. Come 2010, the club was in deep financial trouble as they found themselves over a quarter of a million pounds in debt. Many believed that the team’s best days were well behind them and that those glory days were now simply memories.

That was until the club was purchased by an American business company called Fenway Sports Group. Since then, a couple of new managers have been appointed and the club has now reclaimed its status of being an elite club on the global stage and are attempting to keep their glory days alive and kicking.
